Midhill Vineyard is in cool Central Victoria in the Macedon Ranges, just 2 km west of Romsey and 40 mins from Melbourne CBD.

Our cellar door is only open by appointment.

The 2017 vintage was a challenging season with a very dry summer and a wet period during the ripening months of March and April.  An excellent flowering resulted in a higher than average crop level followed by a cool season and a slow ripening. Harvest was late and not completed until 20th. April. Side trimming helped to improve air flow through the foliage and minimised mildew risk. Cropping levels were about 3 tonnes per acre.

The vineyard produces quality Sparkling wine, Gewurztraminer, Pinot noir and Chardonnay.

Blanc de Blancs
Made from the 100% Chardonnay grapes grown on the red volcanic soils of Romsey.
This Sparkling "MACEDON" is made by the traditional “Champagne method” and matured on lees for +4 years.
A light and delicate sparkling Blanc de Blanc with grape-fruity flavours, and a creamy, yeasty texture with honey overtones. Beautiful with seafood, oysters and at any celebration.

Grown in a high altitude and cool climate, this wine is brightly focussed with melon, citrus and good varietal flavours. There is complexity developed by maturation on lees in French oak. (lightly oaked)
Goes  with Tuna, Chicken and Cheeses.

This floral, dry aromatic wine has varietal flavours of rose water and lychee with musky spices. It is has a talcy palate and balanced acidity.
Partner with Charcuterie, Tuna, Thai prawns and lightly spiced dishes.

Pinot Noir
Plum and white pepper flavours with a complex and engaging bouquet that evolves in the glass.
Textural and bright, with fine tannins framing the palate from front to back. Lingering finish.
Try with Lamb, Pork and Pasta dishes.

Current releases are:

  • 2013 Blanc de Blancs sparkling Chardonnay
  • 2011 Sparkling Chardonnay - Pinot Noir
  • 2014 and 2016 Gewurztraminers
  • 2010 and 2015 Pinot Noirs
  • 2015 Chardonnay
  • 2015 Pinot Noir Rose.

First planting of Chardonnay grapes at Midhill was in 1993. The vines are now well established and annual production is about 2.5 - 3 tons/acre. A further planting of Gewurztraminer and Pinot Noir in 2001 brought the total area to 6.5 acres under vine. Our aim is to produce high quality grapes through careful viticulture and provide our winemakers with the best possible fruit.

The vineyard is on volcanic soil and faces north-east over the pretty valley of 5 Mile Creek, (in the early 1900's it was called "Romsey Creek"). The slope assists the cold air drainage and helps to reduce frost risk in Spring. At first light the morning sun warms the vines and fruit and gives our site a boost in Growing Degree Days over more shaded sites.

Situated at 540 meters elevation, the windy, cool vineyard site is conducive to slow ripening fruit. The cool Summer and cold Autumn nights help to retain good natural acidity in the grapes. Harvest time is normally in March for sparkling base and early April for table wines.

The Midhill farm is also home to a herd of grass-fed Angus cattle which are joined to calve in Autumn. Sheep graze in the vineyard in Winter to control weeds and return fertiliser to the soil.

A happy event was the discovery that some of our vines in the first planting were not Chardonnay. The berries were pinky-brown and popular with the pickers and the birds, and ripened a little earlier than the Chardonnay so were picked separately. Later they were identified as Gewurztraminer. “Gewurz” is a German word for “spicy”. Traminer possibly originated in Northern Italy and is a variety grown best in colder areas (e.g. Alto Adige in Italy and Alsace in France). Research tells us that the variety gives best flavour and aromas when grown in cold areas on well drained, acidic soils of volcanic origin. Our vineyard site is just that. 800 vines have now been propogated from the original vines.

Gewürztraminer lovers seek out this aromatic wine and its popularity is growing. The Midhill Gewurztraminer has classic flavours of Turkish delight and musk, with floral spice and rose-petal aromas. It is dry with a lively crisp acidity.

PS Hadn't looked at the gallery before I sent the previous message. Some lovely shots there. I think there might even be one or two that I took a while ago on an open day - looks like Liz with the tasting group. Nice to have the family and friends in some of the shots - reinforces the feeling of a family enterprise.
