Midhill Vineyard is in the Macedon Ranges in central Victoria, just 2 km west of Romsey on the road to Woodend.

The vineyard produces medal winning Sparkling wine, Gewurztraminer, Pinot noir and Chardonnay.

In 2015 the Midhill Blanc de Blancs 2010 won a Gold medal and "Peoples choice" at the Macedon Ranges Wine Exhibition. A final disgorge of this wine will be available later in the year at the Budburst Macedon Ranges Wine + Food Festival in November.

At the Daylesford Wine Show 2014, the 2009 Blanc de Blancs won a gold medal and trophy for “Best sparkling wine”.

At the Kyneton Wine Show, the 2012 Chardonnay won awards for “Best White Wine in Show” and the Gordon Knight Trophy for the “Best Wine in Show”.

our current releases are:

  • 2011 Sparkling Chardonnay - Pinot Noir

  • 2015 Chardonnay
  • 2015 Pinot Noir Rose.

The 2015 vintage was a trouble free season with excellent flowering conditions, a dry ripening period and no frost. Occasional Spring rains topped up soil moisture and the growth was not too vigorous. Signs indicated that harvest would be early however ripening seemed to slow down dramatically with picking times similar to last year. (Late March to early April). The use of the new vine trimmer helped to improve air flow through the foliage and minimised mildew risk. Cropping levels were about 3 tonnes per acre.

By contrast, the 2016 vintage has been much drier and warmer. Flowering occurred 2 weeks earlier then normal in November. Dry conditions continued resulting in the earliest vintage we've experienced in 23 years. All fruit was picked by 7 March. Berry size was smaller than last year and the crop weight was lower by some 40% than 2015. Fruit quality was clean and of high standard.

History: First planting of grapes at Midhill was in 1993. The vines are now well established and annual production is about 2.5 - 3 tons/acre. Our aim is to produce high quality grapes through careful viticulture and provide our winemakers with the best possible fruit.

The vineyard is on volcanic soil and faces north-east  over the pretty valley of 5 Mile Creek, (in the early 1900's was called "Romsey Creek"). The slope assists the cold air drainage and helps to reduce frost risk in Spring.

At 540 meters elevation and in a windy, cold situation, our site is conducive to slow ripening fruit. Cold nights in Autumn help to retain good natural acidity. Harvest time is normally in March for sparkling base and early April for table wine.

Midhill farm also is also home to a herd of grass fed Angus cattle which are joined to calve in Autumn. In Autumn and Winter cattle and sheep graze in the vineyard to control weeds and return fertiliser to the soil.

Initially we set out to only grow wine grapes to sell, but were encouraged to make wine for our own label and so sought out some wine makers of the region to make it for us under contract. The first vines planted in 1993 were Chardonnay which can be used to make a range of table wine styles and is a major ingredient in sparkling wine. In 2001 we planted Gewurztraminer and Pinot Noir. A total of 6.5 acres of vines is currently planted.

Our Sparkling Chardonnay “Blanc de Blancs” (white of whites) is a dry, citrus style which develops creamy yeast overtones after at least 3 - 4 years on lees. The longer it is kept on lees the smoother it becomes. Our current vintage is now 4 years on lees. The table wine Chardonnay is lightly wooded, fruit driven style with excellent varietal flavours and brisk acidity when young and softens with time. The wines are a reflection of a cool vineyard site, careful viticulture and attention to detail in the winery. Table wine cellaring 8-10 years.

A happy event was the discovery that some of our vines in the first planting were not Chardonnay. The grapes were pinky-brown and popular with the pickers and the birds and ripened a little earlier than the Chardonnay so were picked separately. Later they were identified as Gewurztraminer. “Gewurz” is a German word for “spicy”. Traminer possibly originated in Northern Italy and is a variety grown best in colder areas (e.g. Alto Adige in Italy and Alsace in France). Research tells us that the variety gives best flavour and aromas when grown in cold areas on well drained, acidic soils of volcanic origin. Our vineyard site is just that.

We are finding there are many Gewürztraminer lovers among the wine drinking population. The Midhill Gewurztraminer has a classic Turkish delight palate and musk, floral spice rose petal aromas. It is fermented dry and has a lively crisp acidity. The last 4 vintages of 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014 have produced excellent wines.

Pinot Noir (clone MV6) vines were planted in 2001. The current release Pinot Noir 2010 is a well structured table wine with good varietal flavour. Vintages 2007, 2008 and 2010 have consistently won medals at the Macedon Ranges Wine Exhibition. The Pinot Noir wine has now some bottle age and has developed into a full flavoured , fruit driven wine with balanced acidity.

PS Hadn't looked at the gallery before I sent the previous message. Some lovely shots there. I think there might even be one or two that I took a while ago on an open day - looks like Liz with the tasting group. Nice to have the family and friends in some of the shots - reinforces the feeling of a family enterprise.
